Many of us who are not in the construction and building industry are clueless about what an electrical contractor company does. This article hopes to provide a brief overview of the services provided by electrical contractor companies.

To be legitimate, an electrical contractor company is required to be fully licensed and compliant with all government requirements. Only a legitimate electrical contractor company is allowed to design, install, maintain and repair electrical systems and electrical projects for residential, commercial and industrial clients. It upgrades and does electrical repairs on electrical panels, control panels, electrical boxes and electric motors. It also does cable fault locating and services street lights, parking lot lighting, landscape lighting, commercial lights and security lighting. The electrical contractor company supplies the required electrical parts & supplies for these contracts. It also has bucket trucks on stand by, fully equipped to respond quickly to any electrical emergency.

In locales that are prone to hurricanes, electrical contractor companies are called upon to provide solutions related to hurricane protection. This includes lightning protection, surge protection through surge protectors, and generator installation.

Electrical contractor companies are also hired by residential, commercial and industrial clients to provide government electrical code consulting and help prevent code violation. This is done when constructing new projects. In some areas like Floridas Miami-Dade County, this is done to comply with the 40-Year Building Inspection Program that requires structural and electric inspection for safety for buildings aged yo years and above. The inspection is done every ten years for each structure.

In the United States, electrical contractor companies are categorized as voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors or integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors; inside electrical contractors; and line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors.

Line electrical contractors or outside electrical contractors work with high voltage power transmission beginning from power plants down the line to power substations, power facilities and power users. They, therefore, work with power plant equipment and handle electric generation systems such as hydroelectric energy systems

Inside electrical contractors work on the electrical systems inside the property boundary lines of their individual residential, commercial and industrial clients. They work on heat tracing, electric meters, circuit breakers, junction boxes, fuse boxes and fuses, switches, electric wires, indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, recessed lighting, outdoor fans, patio fans, ceiling fans and ceiling fan repair and water heaters. They are also called upon for home energy audits.

Voice/data/video (VDV) electrical contractors or integrated building systems (IBS) electrical contractors handle low-voltage power installations involving back-up or emergency electrical & lighting systems from auxiliary power generators; power monitoring; energy efficient lighting from solar energy or wind energy; climate control systems including fire detectors, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and exhaust fans; telecommunications systems including closed circuit television and wireless networks; fiber optics; and security systems.

Electrical contractor companies employ electricians of different levels and capabilities. Apprentice electricians are wage earners who undergo professional training while assisting journeyman electricians. Journeyman electricians are already state licensed and are the ones authorized to do the actual design, installation, modification, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and projects. They also terminate cables and handle the installation and troubleshooting of residential wiring, including concealed wiring and underground wiring, relying on technical drawings.

Journeyman electricians can be promoted to become estimator electricians. Estimator electricians calculate the costs for each electrical project and determine the work schedule needed. This is used for bids. Estimator electricians can later be promoted to become project supervisor electricians who manage each electrical project.

These are the basic services provided by electrical contractor companies. People not involved in relates services may not be aware of them but they are very important to the day to day requirements of modern living from residential to commercial and industrial levels.
